A late summer in Portugal
Eighteen days down the coast, drafted moment by moment.
A trip by Xavier and Camille
Landing in Lisbon
The first light, the first hill, the first coffee that was too good to rush.
07:42 · Cais do Sodre, Lisbon
Down to the river before anyone woke up
We did not plan it. The light pulled us out, past the trams, to the water. I said it out loud and Woleta kept it.
09:15 · Baixa, Lisbon
Pasteis, standing up, no plan
Warm, a little burnt on top, exactly right. We ate three between us and decided the day from there.
The hill towns of Sintra
A train, then a fog that lifted just for us, then a garden that did not end.
10:58 · Pena, Sintra
The palace appeared out of the mist
You could not see it, and then you could. We just stopped talking for a minute.
14:20 · Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra
Lost on purpose in the gardens
Every path went up. We let it. The note I left was only two words, Woleta made it a moment.
West to the coast
The road ran out at the ocean and we sat with it for a long time.
17:05 · Cabo da Roca
The most western point, and the wind to prove it
Hard to talk over the wind, so I whispered it instead. It still came out as a paragraph.
North to Porto
A slower city, a darker wine, a bridge we crossed twice.
20:11 · Ponte Luis I, Porto
The bridge at the blue hour
We crossed it once for the view and once because we missed it. Worth both.
21:30 · Vila Nova de Gaia
A cellar that smelled of a hundred years
The guide said a number and I forgot it immediately. I remember the cold and the dark and your face.
The Douro and the way home
The river, the terraces, and the quiet that comes at the end of a trip.
11:48 · Pinhao, Douro Valley
Terraces all the way down to the water
I tried to count the rows and gave up. Some things are better just kept.
16:02 · Algarve
One last coast before the airport
We promised to come back. Woleta will remind us, a year from now.
